Plain-English Meaning
The date you are required to appear in court. If you received a summons, ticket, or were released from custody, your return date is the next scheduled court appearance. Missing it usually results in a bench warrant.
Legal Context
Return dates are set at arraignment, scheduled on summonses and appearance tickets, and rescheduled during adjournments. In ECB/OATH matters, the return date is printed on the violation. In civil matters, the return date is when the defendant must appear or respond. Missing a criminal court return date triggers a bench warrant under CPL § 530.70.
Real-Life Example
After her arraignment, Priya was given a return date of 45 days later for a conference. Her attorney noted the date and appeared on her behalf. When Priya's co-defendant missed his return date, the judge issued a bench warrant.
