Overview

Entering an intersection after the traffic signal has displayed a steady red light. NYC also operates automated red light cameras at many intersections — camera violations are civil (no points), but officer-issued summons are criminal VTL violations with points.

How to Contest

  1. If camera violation: pay or contest at NYC Department of Finance / OATH
  2. If officer issued: appear at TVB, plead Not Guilty
  3. Request officer's memo book and any intersection camera footage
  4. Challenge the timing of when the light changed

  • Light was yellow when vehicle entered intersection
  • Camera malfunction or improper calibration
  • Emergency vehicle in intersection
  • Obstructed view of signal
