Overview

Parking within 15 feet on either side of a fire hydrant. One of the most-ticketed violations in NYC. The 15-foot rule applies even if no sign is posted — it is a universal NYC rule. Towing is also common. Commercial vehicles may receive higher fines.

  1. Contest at OATH — measure distance with evidence (photo with reference object)
  2. Dispute whether vehicle was within 15 feet

Common Defenses

  • Vehicle was more than 15 feet from the hydrant
  • Incorrect plate recorded
  • Vehicle was in a permitted commercial loading zone
