Parking at a meter beyond the paid time, or failing to pay the meter. A civil violation handled by the NYC Department of Finance — not a criminal summons. No license points. Contesting online or in person at OATH is straightforward.

How to Contest

  1. Contest online at nyc.gov/finance or in person at OATH
  2. Present a Muni Meter receipt showing time (if you paid but got ticketed)
  3. Submit photos of broken/defective meter
  4. Request dismissal for meter malfunction

Common Defenses

  • Meter was broken / inoperable (request maintenance logs)
  • Paid receipt shows time valid
  • Vehicle was not parked in a metered space
  • Ticketed within the grace period
